Being near sighted is fun but deadly - 07/21/2009
"But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins." 2 Peter 1:9

I was meditating on this passage this morning and received an interesting insight. In the short term sin is often worth it. Think about it, sin is often a lot of fun. And if all we see is the short term, whether willful or not, it seems like it's worth it and even perhaps beneficial. Not all sin is this way but certainly most. There is just one catch. Sin has eternal consequences. Therefore the only right way to view our actions, not just our sin, is from a long term perspective. So, for the teenager about to sleep with his girlfriend, what impact will this have 20 years from now. Or what about the accountant debating whether or not to steal funds from the company? What path will such a choice send her down. This doesn't only apply to what we would call the big sins. A little white lie can turn into a big deal pretty quickly.

I don't mean to preach. I just thought it interesting because as I looked over my past sins, many if not all were done because I was focusing on the immediate benefit instead of the eternal consequences.
